Keep /home partition

For : Mepis Linux 6.5 Final

Allright, here we go. Mepis Linux 6.5 was just released earlier today.  This guide is built to show users upgrading from the 3.x series how to locate hidden files that may conflict with the new version of Mepis Linux. Specifically, the .kde folder seems to cause the most problems.

This portion of the guide walks through removing the .kde folder.

If you use kmail for your mail client this guide will remove mail that you have saved on your drive.

Part 1 : Remove Config Files  |   Part 2 : Install Mepis Linux

1: Alright, here we are starting at the Mepis Linux 6.5 LiveCD desktop.

Yes, I already removed Clock and weather.

2: Left Click on System

3: Mouse up to File System.

4: Left Click on View Disk Usage

Yes, I know it is also in the lower right hand corner. However, I can't show mouse clicks there.

5: Alright, here we have our KDiskFree window.  We are looking for the /home partition from the previous installation.

For those interested about the mounted drive, the Iriver's hard drive is saving this guide.

6: In my case, my former /home partition is on /dev/sda3, so I am going to Left Click  on it.

7: A right click on my former home partition

Then a Left Click on Mount Device.

8: Another Right Click and we can see that we now have options to unmount or open.

9: Left Click on Open In File Manager

10: All of the user names you might have used should now be visible. If you intend to use the same user name as before, Left Click on your (username) folder.

11: For me, this is/was Zerias.

12: Left Click on View at the top of Konqueror

Then Left Click on Show Hidden Files.

13: We should now have our configuration folders visible, and there is .kde

14: We should know the Delete drill by now.

15: Confirm the Deletion with a Left Click on Delete.

16: With .kde gone, we should be safe to install our new version of Mepis, so Close Konqueror.

If you want, this is a good time to weed out the configuration files of other programs you may want to reset, such as .beryl. Careful with items like .mozilla though, you could lose your mail.

17: With Konqueror closed we should be back at KDiskFree.

18: Another Right Click to our /home partition, and a Left Click on Unmount Device.

19: We can go ahead and close KDiskFree.

Take me to Part 2 and the actual Installation.
