Formatting With GParted
For : GParted By : je.saist This set of guides resulted from a Converstation in City of Heroes chat. A user had made the mistake of getting a system with Vista installed, and had failed to install Windows Xp in it's place. I'm guessing due to Vista's Bootloader that is rather hostile to Multi-Boot Setups. This set of guides then looks at using GParted to clear an existing NTFS drive. GParted is now included as the default Partition Application in Mepis Linux 6.5. While slower (over 4 minutes in waiting for the drives to be scanned) than QTParted, it seems to be more powerful and more reliable. 1: Lets go ahead and open GParted up. Go ahead and click on the K Menu ![]() 2: Mouse up to System ![]() 3: The Mouse over to File System ![]() 4: Left Click on GParted ![]() 5: Again, it may take several minutes for GParted to scan the drives. ![]() 6: GParted defaults to the first drive in the IDE chain, in this case, /dev/hda. We can see that this drive already has one NTFS partition. On most Windows NT5 and Vista Installs, this is the default method of partitioning. Select the partition with a Left Click ![]() 7: To get rid of the selected partition, Left Click on Delete. ![]() 8: GParted will now pop up a lower window listing the requested actions. ![]() 9: Left Click on Apply ![]() 10: Left Click on Apply (again) ![]() 11: While scanning the drives takes a long while, the operations themselves do not. This Drive is now clear of any Partitions ![]() 12: Left Click on Close ![]() Turn to Part 2 for the OEM's Version of a Default Partition. Turn to Part 3 and see how to set a Partition. |
