Dual Drive Installation with NTFS Drive

ntfs-3g driver  |  Keep Home Partition

Mepis Beta 6.5, version 6, introduces ntfs-3g to the Mepis Linux desktop. The high point to ntfs-3g is that it allows writing to NTFS formatted drives, as well as reading. In previous versions of Mepis Linux, while you could read from an NTFS drive, you could not write. However, this new functionality does present a problem.

Because of ntfs-3g the Mepis 6.5 Beta 6 disc auto-mounts NTFS formatted drives. If you are installing a dual-drive setup, Grub will not install properly, and your Windows entry will disappear from the Grub Menu Screen. This walk through shows how to avoid this with the Beta 6 install. This problem is expected to be fixed in Beta 7.

This guide also shows how to install while keeping your /home partition intact.

1: We are starting at the System icon on the taskbar.

2: Left Click on System, then move the mouse up to File System

3: Under File System, Left Click on View Disk Usage (KDiskFree)

4: KDiskFree will now open, and we can see that the ntfs formatted drive is already mounted.

5: Right Click on the ntfs line to bring up the context menu.

6: In the Context Menu, Left Click on Unmount Device.

7: The ntfs drive should now show as unmounted, so we can close KDiskFree.

8: From this point proceed as normal with the Install.

Left Click on Mepis Install

9: Check I agree to the Terms

10: Then Left Click on Next

11: The Mepis Installer will default with the first drive, in this case hda, our ntfs drive.

12: Change the drive to our Linux drive, in this case sda

13: Then Left Click on Next.

14: The Mepis Installer has already located our /root drive.

15: We just need to specify our /swap drive

16: Our /home partition will also need to be selected.

17: If this is a reinstall on top of an existing Mepis Install, Check Preserve Data in /home

18: Then Left Click on Next

19: Left Click on Yes to format sda1

20: Left Click on Yes to format sda2

21: Left Click on Yes to Not format sda3

22: get comfy.

23: Eventually the Mepis Installer will ask where to put Grub. We should not have to change anything on this page.

Left Click on Next

24: Left Click on Yes

25: Left Click on OK

26: The Mepis Installer will now ask for the services we want to install. These are user-preference services.

When ready, Left Click on Next

When ready, Left Click on Next

28: Another user preference page

Left Click on Next when ready.

29: Enter your username and passwords
