Installing with Resized Hard-Drive - Part 2

Merged Home / Root

for: Mepis 6 Series

Preparation Guides: Before a FAT32 or NTFS drive with Windows install can be resized there are numerous steps that need to be taken to prepare Microsoft Windows to be resized. This Guide presumes that the CCleaner, Check Disk, and Defragment Guides have been completed.

CCleaner  |  Check Disk  |  Defragment  |   Regseeker  |   WinASO

Resize Part 1  |  Resize Part 2  |  Resize Part 3

Now, I personally am not a fan of resizing a hard-drive with Windows Installed on it in order to install Mepis. I strongly recommend that you do not resize a hard-drive to install any linux.

Following this Guide WILL PUT YOUR INFORMATION AT RISK.

Not MAY, it WILL.

In Part 1 we covered setting up the partitions on our drive for a single ext3 partition, and a single linux-swap partition of 1gig in size.  Now we'll go over the Mepis Install.

32: After closing qtparted we should be back at the Mepis Install screen.

Make sure Custom install on existing partitions is checked.

33: Left Click on Next

34: As in the other guides, qtparted defaults with sda1, the ntfs partition for /root.

35: We need to change our /root partition to use sda2

36: Same with the swap, make sure that sda3 is selected.

37: With no other partitions available, the /home partition is locked to /root

38: Left Click on Next

39: Mepis will then ask for confirmation one the format for sda2. Left Click on Yes.

40: Mepis will then ask for confirmation one the format for sda3. Left Click on Yes.

41: This next part can take a while depending on your particular system.

42: Eventually Mepis will ask about the GRUB install.

Left Click on Next

43: Mepis will ask for confirmation on the install. Left Click on Yes.

44: This may take a few moments, so wait for Mepis to state that GRUB installed ok

Left Click on OK to continue.

45: The next step will ask to choose particular services you want enabled.

46: Once you've decided, Left Click on Next

47: Mepis should now give us the Network Information. Fill it out with your information.

Left Click on Next when ready.

48: The next step should ask about the keyboard and locale.

When ready, Left Click on Next.

49: You should now be at the User Information screen. Input the desired name and passwords

Left Click on Next to continue.

50: Almost Finished.

51: Left Click on Finish.

52: Left Click on Yes to Reboot.

Congrats, Mepis Linux is now installed on your hard-drive.

Need to see part 1 again?

This not the end of the guide. Over the IDE and SATA guides we created a logical partition to hold our Mepis Linux install. In this guide we did not. If you want to know why, turn to Part 3.

Partition Research is on Part 3

Take me back to the Guides.
