Apt Cache Clear

For : Mepis Linux

While Advanced Packaging Tool, or Apt, makes installing programs in a Debian based Linux a snap, the files are cached on the drive. This guide walks through using the Mepis System Assistant to clear the Apt-Cache.

1: For the purposes of this guide, /var/cache/apt/archives is loaded up in Konqueror.

You don't need to go there. As we can see, the folder has about 121 megs of files saved.

2: Lets Left Click on System

3: Mouse up to MEPIS and Left Click on MEPIS System Assistant.

4: Enter your /root password, then Left Click on ok.

5: We should now be at our Options tab in the MEPIS System.

We are looking for Recover Space, the third box down.

6: Under Recover Space we have an option for Clear packages cache at boot.

We also have an option to Clear System Logs at boot.  Left Click an X into each option.

7: Left Click on OK.

8: Mepis will now tell us that the changes will take place when the system is rebooted.

Left Click on OK.

9: Restart the computer.

10: I've brought up /var/cache/apt/archives again to show that it is now empty.

Take me back to the Guides.
