Backing up Apt Repositories - Manual Method
For : Mepis Linux by : je.saist The Advanced Packaging Tool, or Apt, is typically used to install new programs into Debian based Linux distributions such as Mepis Linux. The files used to load the programs into the system are cached for the install, and generally remain in the system afterwards. For users who automatically download a number of packages to customize their system can simply back up the Apt Cache to a DVD or CD, and use the DVD or CD to load the files onto another system. This Guide looks at a manual backup of the Apt Cache. 1: Lets start with our home folder. ![]() 2: The first thing we are going to do is create a new folder in our /home directory. ![]() 3: The purpose of this folder is to hold the apt-cache, so lets name the folder apt-cache. ![]() 4: A left click to ok and now we should have an apt-cache folder. ![]() 5: Lets go ahead and enter our apt-cache folder. ![]() 6: Now lets Left Click on Location and give a Left Click on New Tab. (or just hit cntrl-t) ![]() 7: This step isn't really needed, but go ahead and point the new tab back to /home. ![]() 8: Alright, in the address bar, we are going to type in /var then hit enter on the keyboard. ![]() 9: Under /var we are looking for a folder named cache Left Click on cache ![]() 10: under /var/cache we are looking for a folder named apt. Left Click on apt. ![]() 11: under /var/cache/apt we want archives. ![]() 12: Here we go, all of our previously downloaded progams and files. ![]() 13: There are a couple of files we do want to get our of our way first, so I've scrolled down to the L section. ![]() 14: The first thing I'm going to do is move the file lock to the very bottom of the folder. As shown below, lock is below the bottom line of .deb files. ![]() 15: Same thing with the partial folder generally found at the top of apt/archives. ![]() 16: We want both Partial and Lock moved to the bottom of apt/archives. ![]() 17: We can now start selecting the left over files with our mouse. ![]() 18: There we go, all of our .deb files are selected with the mouse. ![]() 19: Now we just need to copy ![]() 20: Lets go back to the apt-cache tab we had from step #5. ![]() 21: Now we just need a paste. ![]() 22: There we go, now all of our .deb files are copied over. ![]() 23: The rest of this guide is pretty basic K3b stuff. Open up the K-menu and go to Multimedia. ![]() 24: Under multimedia Left Click on K3b. ![]() 25: Wait for K3b to load. ![]() 26: Left Click on New Data CD Project ![]() 27: In the folder menu at the top of K3b, Left Click on our apt-cache folder. ![]() 28: Once in apt-cache, select all the files with a control-a. ![]() 29: Use the mouse to drag the files down to the bottom K3b menu, and wait for the files to add. ![]() 30: Once the files are added, Left Click on burn. ![]() 31: Left Click on Burn again. ![]() 32: Wait for the CD to burn. ![]() 33: When K3b finishes, Left Click on Close. ![]() And now your apt-packages are archived. Take me back to the Guides. |
