Opera - Web Install

Obtain Opera 9.x

for : Debian Based Linux

by : je.saist

With the start of Mepis 6.5 the Opera Browser is now packaged and listed in the Mepis Repositories. That makes this guide sort of redundant. However, as this will also work for any Linux user who uses a Debian based system and has kpackage installed, decided to go ahead and post the guide.

So why would you want to use Opera anyways? Isn't FireFox good enough? While FireFox may be more popular, FireFox isn't everywhere. If you have a mobile phone Opera is often the only alternative to Internet Explorer. If you have a Nintendo Wii, your browser is Opera. Some people just prefer Opera over FireFox. Whatever the reason, this guide will walk through getting Opera from the Opera.com website.

Part 1 - Obtain  |  Part 2 - Install

1: Since FireFox is generally the default browser, go ahead and open up FireFox.

2: Wait for FireFox to load.

3: In the address bar, type in www.opera.com

Then Left Click on Go

4: Opera's page should detect that we are running on Linux, as shown on the Green Button.

Left Click on Download Opera

5: The nice thing about Opera is that they do a lot of binary pre-packaging themselves. Most of the time Opera defaults to Ubuntu

However, if we Left Click on the Drop Down Menu

6: We'll find that Opera has a Mepis package ready.

7: Here we see that Opera packages for Mepis Versions 3.4-3, 6.0, and 3.3.1.

There really shouldn't be any difference between versions though.

8: Left Click on Download Opera

9: It will take a bit for Opera to parse the download request.

10: Eventually we will have a FireFox save window.

11: Left Click on Save to disk

12: Then Left Click on OK

13: Wait for Opera to download.

14: You can either close FireFox at this time, or simply show desktop.

15: Alright, screen cleared.

Turn to Part 2 for the Installation and Configuration.
