Opera - Web Install

Install Opera 9.x

for : Debian Based Linux

by : je.saist

With the start of Mepis 6.5 the Opera Browser is now packaged and listed in the Mepis Repositories. That makes this guide sort of redundant. However, as this will also work for any Linux user who uses a Debian based system and has kpackage installed, decided to go ahead and post the guide.

Part 1 - Obtain  |  Part 2 - Install

In Part 1 we went and got the Opera Browser from the Opera Homepage. We had FireFox save the file to the desktop, and now we will finish the Install.

16: Since I have FireFox saving to my Desktop, the Opera file is convient. If you have FireFox saving to another location, go ahead and go to your normal download file.

Left Click on the Opera .deb file.

17: Kpackage should open up.

18: Left Click on Install

19: We'll have an overview screen that will give us some options.

20: Left Click on Install

21: Enter your /root password then Left Click on OK

22: Wait for Opera to install.

23: When you get RESULT=0

Left Click on Done.

24: Go ahead and Close Kpackage.

The point of using the .deb files is that things like Kmenu entries are supposed to be automatic. However, every time I've Installed Opera the Kmenu entry doesn't show without forcing the menus to update. This next part of the Guide walks through forcing the menus to update, or alternatively, you could just restart Mepis.

If you reboot, go ahead and skip to step #30:

25: Left Click on System

26: Left Click on Terminal Program (Konsole)

27: We should now have the console up.

28: Type in the command update-menus

Then hit Enter on the keyboard.

29: We should not get any errors or any feedback.

If you chose to reboot, welcome back.

30: So Lets check our Kmenu under Internet.

31: And there is our Opera entry.

Left Click on Web browser (Opera)

32: Opera should pop up a license agreement.

33: Left Click on I agree.

34: Opera then should also warn about shortcut problems

Left Click
on Close

35: Opera is now Installed.

Take me back to Part 1.

Take me back to the Guides.
