Removing KAquarium / KDE tricks

For: Mepis Linux

by: je.saist

Probably one of the most common comments and or questions in the MepisLovers forums is over the inclusion of Kaquarium, and/or how to remove the application. This guide is a semi-followup to the KDE-Tricks guide for Mepis 3.x / 2004.x, however that guide was based on making Mepis friendlier to 800*600 screens. This guide is built around showing how to clean up the default Mepis Desktop with a default resolution of 1024*768.

I also need to stress that this is cleaning up the desktop for myself and how I like my Desktop to look.

1: The default KDE desktop, kind of. I've already removed the clock. (got tired of emails about timestamps being different)

Left Click on Close to get rid of the KTip Window. I personally let KTip run, there is some good information in there.

2: We are going to move our mouse down to the taskbar, between the Pager and Kaquarium.

3: Then we are going to Right Click in the taskbar

We should have a Context Menu pop up.

4: Left click on Remove From Panel

5: Left Click on Applet

6: Left Click on KAquarium

7: There. It's gone. Happy?

I'm not done though, so I'm going to Right Click in the Taskbar Space again

8: Going back to Remove From Panel

9: Going back to Applet and then Weather Report

Seriously, if I need to know what the weather is outside, I'll open a window or walk out a door.

10: Alright, Weather Report is gone. I still have more to do though.

11: Now, one of the parts of the desktop that bothers me is the applications in the lower right hand corner. I like them stacked up on top of each other than spread out. Gives me a little more desktop space. Don't understant?

Lets go back to the Taskbar space and Right Click Again

12: Left Click on Configure Panel

13: A familiar screen from the first KDE tricks guide.

Do you see where it says Size?  Right below it we should have Normal printed.

Left Click on Normal

14: Normal will now drop down into a menu.

15: Left Click on Custom

16: We can now see that the slider and numbers in the Size box are now changeable.

17: I am going to set the Custom size to be 48 Pixels

18: Then Left Click on Apply in the lower right hand corner.

19: Take a look at the Lower Right Hand Corner of the Desktop. Notice that all the icons are now stacked on top of each other?

20: Alright, I'm done here. Left Click on Ok

21: I like my desktop, although that Earthlink sign is annoying considering that I don't use dialup. Right Click on the Earthlink icon

22: Left Click on Delete

23: Mepis will ask if we are sure we want to delete an icon off the desktop.

24: Left Click on Delete to confirm deletion.

25: There we go, a cleaned up desktop.

Take me back to the guides page.
