Installing
Evolution Email Client / Recovering Email For: Mepis Linux by: je.saist In Part 1 we left off having just marked evolution, evolution-plugins, and evolution-exchange for installation. There is one more plugin that will probably be very useful. So we'll grab the last plugin, install Evolution, then work on finding old mail already on the hard-drive. 21: The other plugin we might find useful is openoffice.org-evolution, a plugin that allows OpenOffice to access Evolution's Address Books. This should help for those looking to fully replace the Microsoft Office Suite. Right Click on openoffice.org-evolution to bring up the context menu. ![]() 22: Left Click on Mark for Installation. ![]() 23: Alright, we should now show the yellow arrow pointing right next to openoffice.org-evolution ![]() 24: Left Click on Apply at the top of Synaptic. ![]() 25: Remember, you can review the list of changes here. ![]() 26: When ready, Left Click on Apply to start the install. ![]() 27: There should not be any configuration questions, so just wait for Synaptic to finish. ![]() 28: Left Click on Close. ![]() 29: Go ahead and Close Synaptic ![]() 30: Go ahead and open up the Kmenu A note needs to be made here. Sometimes the Kmenu is not updating properly upon installing a program in from Synaptic. When I was performing these steps on the older K6-2 unit, I had to reboot for the Evolution link to show up in the K-Menu. So if it doesn't show, solve it the Windows Way, Reboot. ![]() 31: Left Click on Office ![]() 32: We should see Groupware Suite (Evolution) now listed under Office. Although we know Evolution is installed, we are not going to open it quiet yet. Lets go find some old mail. ![]() 33: Open up your /home folder. It is on the task bar as a little house. ![]() 34: Wait for Konqueror to load. Now, there is a divergence here. As i have not run Evolution yet there should not be any mail stored in my new home folder. If you are using an existing home folder that you had Evolution in before. say like you just re-installed Mepis and kept your home folder, then the evolution files should still be in your /home/username folder. In that case, go to Part 3 and step #48. If, like me, you backed up your previous /home/username folder under a different name or to a different location, continue onwards from here. ![]() 35: Click the Up arrow in the Konqueror Address Bar ![]() 36: Yes, I do hose out a /home folder on a regular basis. Why do you ask? ![]() 37: In this case, I'm going to aaist, which was used back on SimplyMepis 3.4.3. It was simply renamed when Installing Mepis 6 so as not to conflict with the New Home Folder. I'm going to go ahead and open by Left Clicking on aaist ![]() 38: Alright, there is the contents of the drive. And yes, I did try running Guild Wars through cedega, why do you ask? ![]() 39: We need to find our Evolution Data, so we need to see our hidden files. Left Click on View at the top of Konqueror. ![]() 40: Left Click on Show Hidden Files ![]() And turn to Part 3 where we'll finish installing Evolution into Mepis. You'll also get a rare chance to see how much spam I normally get, as well as why I no longer respond to the current Mepisguides email address. I think I missed a plugin, where is Part 1 again? I need my Email! I'm heading to Part 3 to Finish this up! |
