Installing Evolution Email Client / Recovering Email

For: Mepis Linux

by: je.saist

Over Part 1 we got the install files for evolution, and through Part 2 we actually ran the install. We left off having opened up the /home folder where I had a backup of Evolutions mail data and enabling view hidden folders.

41: So here's /aaist with all of the config files and hidden folders visible. We are looking for the folder .evolution

42: The .evolution folder contains the mail, calender information, as well as any saved address books. This is the folder that you need to save if you are backing up your Evolution data.

Right Click on .evolution to bring up the context menu.

43: Left Click on Copy

44: Alright, we need to open up our current /home/username folder.

Left Click on the Home Icon.

45: Right Click in your current /home/username folder to bring up the Context Menu.

46: Left Click on Paste.

And there we go. Now, it doesn't matter where you copy .evolution from. So if it was/is on a CD, the steps are fairly the same.

47: Go ahead and open Evolution up.

48: While the mail, calender, and address book information is now saved to our /home/username folder, we'll still need to run through the initial Evolution install procedures.

Left Click on Forward.

49: Input the name you want attached to your Email and your email address. If you want to specify a different email for people to reply to, you can do that here as well.

50: Once you have your information entered, Left Click on Forward.

51: Evolution will now ask for your server type. To select it, Left Click on the Down Arrow next to none.

52:  Evolution does support several incoming server types. Select the one that you will be using.

For most people, that will be POP

53: Once you select the Server Type, the rest of the server information will need to be entered. You can get this information from your Internet Service Provider.

Once the information is entered, Left Click on Forward.

54: Evolution should now provide a screen allowing you to specify whether or not Evolution automatically checks for messages, as well as if those messages should be left on the server.

Once you've made your choices, Left Click on Forward.

55: Evolution's next step should be to ask about the outgoing server. Evolution should default to SMTP.

Again, get these settings from your Internet Service Provider. Click Forward when the information is entered.

56: Evolution will then ask to identify the Account. Type in whatever you want the account to be labeled as. If you are not sure what you want the account to be labeled as, just type your name.

Then Left Click on Forward.

57: Evolution's final step will be to identify your time zone. You can scroll in on the map, so locate a Dot near you.

Once you have your time zone, Left Click on Forward to continue.

58: And we are done. Left Click on Apply to complete the install.

59: Evolution should now open, and as expected it has my emails from when I was using 3.4.3.

60: And just out of morbid curiosity, I checked the existing @mepisguides.com address.

Ouch. So. no, it is not your imagination if I haven't responded since 2005 to @mepisguides.com address. And it isn't your imagination if the message got bounced because the inbox was full.

I missed a plugin, can I go back to Part 1?

I missed where the .evolution folder was. I can look that up in Part 2, right?
