Debian Multimedia

For : Mepis Linux

by : je.saist

On the last page we added the Debian-Multimedia GPG key into our system, closed out console, and are still looking at the FAQ page on Debian Multimedia. Wonderful, now lets get the servers.

26: On the left hand side of the FAQ page we should still have Main page and FAQ.

Left Click on Main Page

27: We should now have Main Page, FAQ, Mirros, and Old news on the left hand column.

Left Click on Mirrors.

28: There is our list of mirrors. However, like the FAQ page before, lets go ahead and open the other program we will need, in this case, Synaptic.

29: The curse of Ksnapshot not capturing the mouse. I'm clicking on the Synaptic Icon. Because Mepis defaults to "fade handles" on taskbar icon handling, all you really see is the fade handle showing up.

30: Synaptic asking for /root password. Input and Left Click on Ok.

31: Once Synaptic is open, lets go up to the top and Left Click on Settings

32: Left Click on Repositories

33: There is our listing of the repositories Synaptic is currently using.

34: Left click on the button at the bottom that says New

35: Back to FireFox. Now that Syanptic's repositories are open and ready for edit, we can now grab the sever information from Debian-Multimedia.

36: Now, you can chose any one of the servers listed here. Now, while you can get alpha, amd64, hppa, i386, ia64, powerpc and sparc packages directly from Debian-Multimedia, it's better to use a mirror to help save on bandwith (yeah, I know, I'm one to talk).

In the case of my system, I just chose http://debian-multimedia.dfoell.org/.

37: Right Click and Copy

38: Back to Synaptic. There is our Repositories box from earlier.

Right Click in the field that says URI

39: Left Click on Paste

40: In the field labled Distrobution type in stable

41: In the field labled Section(s) type in main

42: Left Click on OK

43: Synaptic now warns that the repositories have changed.

If like me, you still have this warning enabled, just Left Click  on Close.

44: Left Click on Reload

45: Wait for Synpatic to finish. When it finishes we should notice that the Left hand Column has changed.

New In Repository should have been added. Left Click on New In Repository.

46: One the list comes up on the Right Hand Side, scroll down the list.

We are looking for libdvdcss2, and as shown below, it isn't far into the list. Right Click on libdvdcss2

(yes, I know, no search from me?)

47: Left Click on Mark for Installation

48: Scroll Down to the bottom of the list and we should find w32codecs.

Right Click
on w32codecs

49: Left Click on Mark for installation.

50: libdvdcss2 and w32codecs are not the only items in Debian-Multimedia that are worth looking at.

We'll also find hymn in here. hymn removes Apple's encoding on Itunes track. That should be useful.

Alright, on page 3 we'll finish the install and get a DVD loaded into Mepis.

To Page 1 and GPG again?

To Page 3 and playing a DVD!
