Opera Web Browser

Proof Of Operation Video Capture

For: Nintendo Wii

This is one of the proof of operation guides using an aquired video capture card.
For more information on the capture card and method, and why the picture
is so blurry and white washed, a hardware report is located here.

This guide walks through opening up the Internet Browser on the Nintendo Wii, and saving a webpage as a favorite, as well as navigating to another web page through links.

So, why use a console web-browser anyways if someone has a PC?  Well, not everybody has a PC that runs FireFox or Opera. By checking a webpage through a console browser, bugs or errata with the web page may be uncovered that wouldn't be noticed under normal testing.

1: Although it is fairly hard to see, the Internet icon is located next to the Forcast Channel.

A press on the A button will open up Opera.

2: Even some of the text is washed out in this snap shot, we can easily see the Web Address.

A press of the A button while over Web Address is all we need.

3:  Now we can enter a website. Sadly, USB keyboards are not supported... yet.

After entering a website, pressing the A button on OK will start the page load.

4: As shown, there is indeed a problem with the Mepisguides site in low resolution. We can see the text running out of the table.

5: Move the hand pointer over the star to access Favorites with a press of the A button.

6: Hmm... wonder why Opera developed Speed Dial...

As shown, Mepisguides is already favorited, so what happens when you favorite a site that is already listed?

7: A nice friendly message that this favorite is already listed.

A press of the A Button on the check mark will exit this screen.

8: And another press of the A button on Close.

9: Okay, lets work on zooming in and out.

Yes... I know the cursor is on the start page... ignore that.

10: Pressing the minus button on the Wiimote zooms the picture out.

11: And the plus sign button zooms in.

Conviently, I've zoomed in on the Mepislovers link, and with a press of the A button...

12: Mepislovers loads up.

Haven't registered? You should.

13: A little bit of a Zoom out here... and the white washing rears its rather ugly head.

14: Okay, now to favorite Mepislovers...

15: Add to favorites with a press of the A button and done.

16: This picture was mainly for color balance on the perception of black.

A couple other notes. The 1 and 2 buttons on the Wii-Mote switch back and forth between a single column view and the normal view of the page. The single column view mode is similar to what one would generally find on a cell phone device.

The B Trigger acts as a control modifer. With the B trigger held down the pointer scrolls in an indicated direction, and the plus and minus buttons server to act as back and forward buttons.  The D-pad, normally used to scroll about the screen, changes with the pressing of the B-trigger. Holding the B-trigger and pressing the down button brings up the favorites.  B trigger + left brings up the search entry, and B trigger + right brings up the address entry. Unfortunantly... there is no on-screen indication of which entry box is which...

Against the Playstation 3 browser, the Wii version of Opera has much lower possible resolution, and does not yet support keyboard or mouse input.  However, unlike the PS3 Browser, the Wii Opera browser passes the Acid 2 test with ease, and quite frankly, can be controlled from 20 feet away.

Take me back to the Guides.
