Dpkg-Reconfigure Xserver-Xorg : In OS For : Mepis Linux with Fglrx by : je.saist Part 1 | Part 2 The move to a new version of X.org brings some changes to the X.org configuration. A few more screens are added, so this guide walks through them using Konsole with Mepis Linux already opened up. So why is the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg command useful? Well, in addition to selecting a specific driver, it can also be used to set new resolutions and different refresh rates. This guide shows setting the 8.40 Fglrx driver found in the Mepis 7 Beta 5 release on a 1280*1024 native LCD panel. While the configuration looks intimidating, most of this is just hitting the Enter button on the keyboard. 23: Okay, when we left off we had just selected our keyboard type as pc104 Another hit to the enter key to continue. ![]() 24: Enter on the keyboard again. ![]() 25: Hit that Enter key once again. ![]() 26: A lot more mouse entries... if you are not sure? Yes, hit enter on the keyboard to select the default /dev/input/mice. ![]() 27: As in the other guides I do not know what the difference is. ImPS/2 seems to work... So another hit to the Enter key. ![]() 28: Generally it's alright for X.org to mimic a 3 button mouse. Hit Enter on the keyboard to select yes. ![]() 29: X.org will now enumerate the various rendering modes. Hit Enter on the keyboard to continue on. ![]() 30: As shown below, the new X.org config tool leaves a few entries unchecked. ![]() 31: Sometimes I go ahead and check them all off before hitting enter to continue. If you don't want to, you don't have to. ![]() 32: Now X.org will ask to save the files. Hit Enter on the keyboard to save your progress. ![]() 33: X.org will now offer to autodetect the monitor. Won't hurt to hit yes... So Enter on the Keyboard to autodetect. ![]() 34: If no monitor name is given, this isn't a big deal. Hit Enter on the keyboard to move on. ![]() 35: Reason why it doesn't matter is that X.org now shows the available resolutions it can render in. ![]() 36: Use the Arrow Keys to move up and down the list, and the spacebar to select a resolution. With the desired resolutions checked, hit the tab button. ![]() 37: Now Ok should be highlighted. Hit Enter on the keyboard to continue. ![]() 38: X.org will default to the advanced setting. Use the Arrow Keys to select Medium. ![]() 39: With Medium selected, hit Enter on the keyboard. ![]() 40: X.org will use the highest resolution selected in steps 35-37 and show available refresh rates. My resolution, 1280*1024 only has one available X.org refresh rate, 60hz. Hit Enter on the Keyboard to select the desired resolution and it's refresh rate. ![]() 41: Another Enter to the keyboard to save the file. ![]() 42: X.org will now ask to set the default color bit depth, and explains the 32bit color depth. Hit Enter on the keyboard to select the color depth. ![]() 43: And the configuration is finished. ![]() 44: Reboot. ![]() Return to Part 1 for initial setup? Take me back to the Guides. |
