AMD Catalyst Driver 8.39 Overlay Bug

For: Mepis 7 Beta

by: je.saist

This guide applies to all supported ATi Radeon Graphics Cards as of the 8.39 Drivers.

These are the Radeon 9500-9800 Series; the x300-x800 Series; and the x1x00 series.

Using the Mepis X-windows assistant to install the ATi Fireglide and Radeon X Driver (Fglrx) can result in a hardware overlay appearing in the lower right hand corner of the monitor. This overlay typically is a green square with AMD Unsupported Hardware printed inside.

The fix is rather simple, run the ATi installer.  This guide walks through finding, and running, the ATi Catalyst installer to remove the Hardware Overlay.

1: Opening up FireFox

2: And the address we want is http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/linux-radeon.html

However, at the time of publishing the driver has been updated to be 8.40.

The 8.39 driver is here: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/previous/linux-r-8-39-4.html

3: That means that the following screenshot is in-accurate.

Once the 8.39 driver is found, Left Click on the ATi Driver Installer.

4: Left Click on Save File.

7: Left Click on Terminal Program (Konsole).

11: Now we should be in root mode.

12: Change the directory to the download location for Firefox.

For me, since I have FireFox saving to the desktop, I just type in the command cd Desktop

13: The terminal should now be located in the download directory for Firefox.

14: Type in the command sh ati

Then hit the Tab Button on the keyboard.

15: The rest of the filename should now be spelled out.

Hit enter on the keyboard.

16: And wait for the installer to run.

17: We are not worried about actually installing the driver. The driver is already installed.

18: Left Click on Continue.

19: Left Click on I agree.

20: Left Click on Continue

21: Wait.

22: Left Click on Exit
