For : Mepis Linux 7

This is a recap of the Mepis 6.5 Ipod Guide on Mepis 7 Beta 3

Yes, I have gotten my hands on an iPod... what is surprising is who it came from.

Yes. that is indeed an NCSoft logo.  This is specifically the 2gig Second Generation iPod Nano.

Unfortunately, this also means that it is one of the models not currently supported by the Rockbox firmware. While this iPod can't be made to play .ogg or .flac files right now, it is still accessible for .mp3 and .wav files.

1: Plugging the iPod in to a Mepis 7 system results in a pop-up box asking how to handle the device.

2: A Left Click to OK will launch a Konqueror window.

3: Under Konqueror we see the four control files for the Ipod.

4: Under Infocenter the iPod is identified under the USB controller.

This system is significantly older than the system used in the Mepis 6.5 guide. Thus, the speed is capped at 12mbit/s on this USB controller, and the Vendor ID doesn't show.

5: Still under Kinfocenter, the storage space is also shown.

Note that the /dev now goes to the sd label, rather than a specific /dev/ipod entry.

6: So what does the iPod look like in Amarok?

7: While the Ipod is plugged in, Amarok currently reports No Device Available.

8: So lets Left Click on Settings

Then Left Click on Configure Amarok

9:  Left click on the Media Devices section on the left hand bar.

In this section the device at sdb2 is currently under status Do not handle.

10: A Left Click to Do not handle allows selecting other Plugins.

11: A Left Click on Apple iPod Media Device will select the iPod plugin.

12: With Apple iPod Media Device selected, Left Click on OK.

13: Now there should be an entry at the top stating iPod at /dev/(entry).

We can also see some tracks listed now.

14: And there is part of the list expanded.

15: One final bit of information... attempting to transfer unsupported song files... such as .ogg?

Amarok is very convienent in notifying that the transfer did not happen.
