CCleaner - Part 2
For : Microsoft Windows NT5 - Windows 2000 Pro / Windows Xp by : je.saist Note: Mepisguides is aimed towards the user who is moving from Windows and is not familiar with Linux interface systems. Many of the steps such as opening up a browser and selecting a web page are shown in the Linux guides. Since it is presumed that most readers of Mepisguides are fairly competent with Windows, many of these minor steps are intentionally skipped. There is also minimal effort to hide Paint during the screen capture process, as Microsoft Windows provides no other native screen capture solution. I am also presuming that Firefox is installed under Windows. CCleaner Part 1 | CCleaner Part 2
In Part 1 we went over getting CCleaner from the download site. Now lets actually open CCleaner up and see what it does. 15: As Shown here I've already pulled CCleaner up in the start menu to open the program. ![]() 16: And here we have the main window. To start the program, Left Click on Analyze ![]() 17: CCleaner will give a warning if there is a program open that it is trying to clean. In this case I'm being warned that Firefox's Cache won't be cleared. Left Click on Ok to clear the warning. ![]() 18: Once CCleaner identifies all of the files it can delete, it will give a summery. Left Click on Run Cleaner ![]() 19: It may take a few minutes, but eventually CCleaner will report Cleaning Complete ![]() 20: CCleaner is not limited to cleaning just cache files. Left Click on issues in the Left Hand Column. ![]() 21: Left Click on Scan for Issues ![]() 22: CCleaner will search the Windows Registry for a variety of issues, such as unused File Extensions, ActiveX programs, and programs that you installed that haven't been removed from the Registry. Cleaning out the Registry can help with Windows Stability issues. Left Click on Fix Selected Issues ![]() 23: CCleaner will ask if you want to back up the registry before we begin. This is really a trick question for Microsoft Windows. If the registry is damaged, you are probably going to have to re-install Windows anyways to fix the problem, and if the registry was already that badly corrupted, you would be reinstalling Windows anyways. Because of this I typically hit NO. However, if it makes you feel more secure, feel free to backup the registry. ![]() 24: In my case CCleaner found 110 issues, however I have personally witnessed as many as 7,000+ before. A few hundred is acceptable and to be expected no matter how much care and attention you give to Windows Maintenance. Left Click on Fix All Selected Issues ![]() 25: CCleaner will ask one more time just to make sure you want to delete registry entries. Left Click on Ok ![]() 26: When CCleaner finishes, Left Click on Close ![]() 27: In many cases, depending on the number of problems, there may be regressive issues. Certain entries cannot be fixed until another entry is fixed. Due to these problems with the Windows Registry, it is a good idea to Scan For Issues again. ![]() 28: Just ensuring that the system is indeed clean. ![]() Return to Page 1 for Installing? Go to the Resize Installation Guide? Go back to the Guides. |
