| Time to play again, this
time with another Emulation
program. ePSXe is
widely considered to be the best Playstation emulator,
period.
And as
it is available for Linux, no reason why Linux users should be without
the fun. This is Part 3 of a three part guide. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 When Part 2 was completed, all the files needed to run ePSXe had been downloaded. Now comes time to configure those files. 67: Typing the directory command ensures that the file needed is in the /epsxe folder. ![]() 68: Now type ./epsxe This will make the ePSXe program run from the Konsole. ![]() 69: Looks like the binary worked. ![]() 70: Click on config and then click on video ![]() 71: Currently ePSXe shows that the MesaGL driver is selected. ![]() 72: Click on the button that says configure ![]() 73: Make sure everything looks fine. Then hit ok ![]() 74: Now click the button that says test and make sure the plugin works alright. Then click ok twice to get back to the ePSXe program. ![]() 75: Now click on config and choose sounds ![]() 76: Click on test and make sure the plugin is working. ![]() 77: Go back and click on config then bios Currently I have the USA bios loaded. If there is no bios listed, simply hit the select button then point the file manager to the /epsxe/bios folder. ![]() 78: Alright, now that everything is checked, time to a test. Click on file, then run bios ![]() 79: Looks like ePSXe loaded the US bios. After this, go ahead and close epsxe. ![]() 80: Back at the Konsole, type ./epsxe again to open the program back up. This time, a different display method will be attempted. The reason for downloading two GPU plugins earlier is because ePSXe can improve the rendering quality of Playstation games. If Pete's XGL2 plugin works, the emulator will be able to do more for the picture. One the advantage emulators like ePSXe carry is the capability to do more than the original hardware. Imagine adding curved surfaces and anti-aliasing to Playstation games. Polygon counts can be doubled, or tripled for a model while the image is being built. Textures can also be smoothed and filtered out at the rendering level. Theoretically, under ePSXe, a Playstation game like Final Fantasy VII could be rendered with FF X's level detail. Something to think about. While the technology to do this in real time is not there yet, significant image quality improvements can be had now. Also, users of ATi video cards may not be able to run the MesaGL package, while the XGL2 package may work fine. Anyways, to change packages, simply go to config video, hit the down arrow, and select the XGL2 Driver from the list. ![]() 81: Now, try to run the Bios from the file again. This time ePSXe crashed with a GPU error. That is why ePSXe was ran from the command line first. When errors like this occur, opening the file from Konqueror may not show the error at hand. Well, since it looked like ePSXe ran with the MesaGL Driver we need to be sure to select the MesaGL plugin again. If the MesaGL plugin did not work, try the XGL2 plugin. At this point, go ahead and close the Konsole. ![]() 82: With the Konsole closed, Konqueror should still be at the /epsxe folder. Now to load a desktop link. Go ahead and drag the binary file epsxe over to the desktop. ![]() 83: Release and choose link here ![]() 84: At this point, put a Playstation CD into the Cd-Rom, and mount the cd-rom. ![]() 85: Go ahead and open ePSXe up by the link. Don't forget to go back to config video and change the driver back to the MesaGL driver if the XGL2 driver failed earlier. ![]() 86: Choose Run Cdrom from the file menu. ![]() 87: Hope you enjoyed this! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry, I was asleep. Where did we start again? Part 1. Take me there. I think I messed up on that whole plugin loading thing again. What page was that? Part 2. Special note: This guide was only made possible by the help of Ngemu. Ngemu currently has a pop-up policy that I do not agree with. Even though I am grateful for their help and aide in solving the install issue with XGL2, I cannot in good conscience direct others to the Ngemu site by links as long as the current pop-up policy is in place. However, if readers of this guide wish to visit Ngemu, and it is a very good source of emulation related tools and assistance, simply direct the browser to http://www.ngemu.com Thanks Ngemu ![]() |
