Installing Quake 3 Arena and Quake 3 Team Arena

For : MEPIS Linux

Quake 3 is without a doubt one of the most popular FPS games of all time, and Linux users can get in on the frag.  This guide requires both command line usage, as well as actually having the Quake CD's.  If you do not have the CD's, you will not be able to complete this guide

This is one of the largest guides created so far.  As such, it is split into two parts:

Part 1

Part 2

This is part 2, so lets get back to installing Quake 3 Arena.

27: The last step involved copying PAK0.PK3 from the CD to our Hard-drive.  This is probably going to take a while to complete.

28: When the Copy completes we should have 9 files in our baseq3 folder.

29: Go up one level to go back to the file:/home/(username)/quake3 folder

30: There should be a shell script here labeled Quake3. Click on the shell script.

31: Looks like Q3A loaded, and now it wants the CD-Key.  Alright, put your CD-Key in.

32: After putting the CD-key in, go ahead and exit the game.  We should be back to our Quake3 folder.  Sometimes there might be a readme file here as well.

33: Now to focus on Team Arena.  Inside the Quake3 folder is another folder that should be labeled Missionpack. Open the folder.

34: We currently should have 3 files in the Missionpack folder

35: Our Quake 3 Arena disc is probably still in the drive.  Right click on the CD-Rom, and lets go with the Eject option

36: Once the Q3A disc is gone, put the Team Arena disc in the drive, and open the CD-Rom up.

37: Inside the Cdrom should be a folder labeled Setup. Open that folder

38: Inside the Setup folder should be a folder labeled Missionpack.  Open the missionpack folder

39: Only one file is needed here.  PAK0.PK3

40: Copy the PAK0.PK3 file

41: Go back to the file:/home/(username)/quake3/missionpack folder and Paste

Since we left the menu open, the Missionpack folder should be on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

42: Now the PAK file just has to copy over. This will probably take a while

43: When the copy completes, there should be 4 files in the missionpack folder.

44: To access Team Arena, go up a level back to the Quake3 folder and open up the quake3 shell script file.

45: Once Quake3 loads, there should be an option in the Quake menu for Team Arena

46: There is Team Arena, but it is not ready yet.  Go down to Options

47: Once in Options, click on Setup

48: In the Setup section, go over to Enter CD Key

49:  Input your CD-key

50: Now that the install is complete, time to get a shortcut going, and explain some of the events of the install.

First : The reason we did this install in user mode instead of root is so that if we want to add maps, skins, weapons, or anything else to Quake3, we will not have to be in Root Mode to do so.

Second: Quake 3 Linux comes with two binary packages, one for Single processor computers, and one for Multiple processor computers.  You will want to use the single processor command file.

Anyways, onto the shortcut.  Drag the quake3 file out to the desktop

51: Link here.

52: ID also arranged for a K-menu entry.  This should also work under Gnome too.

Well, the drill is simple from this point. Get the FRAG ON!

I wanna see Part 1 again!
